My name
is Roland Sawicki and I love to make knives.
I was born in 1960, in Esslingen, Germany. After finishing junior high school and an
apprenticeship as a tool and die maker, I completed the Advanced College
entrance qualification. Now I have an engineering degree as a process
engineer.
To
balance my office job, I have always liked to work with my hands, be it
joinery, bow building or just simply repairing broken things. Working with my hands keeps my mind clear and
my feet grounded.
Making my
first knife in 2008 was mostly a coincidence.
I needed a new knife and wanted to see if I could recall my training and
successfully work with steel. Once my
first knife was finished, I was infected with the knife-creation virus. The fascination to create something
functional, beautiful and long lived has kept me in its grip. The idea that my knives might outlive me and
be handed down to the next generation is very compelling and motivating.
With my
full-time job and busy family life, knife making is a hobby. On average, I make 6 knives a year,
sometimes more, sometimes less.
I strive is to make my knives as perfect as
possible. Someday, I will make the ideal
one.
